How does a gold detector machine work? - Warren Buffett - 10-10-2025

A gold detector machine works by using electromagnetic induction to send an electromagnetic field into the ground. When this field encounters a metal object, it creates a secondary magnetic field that the detector's coil picks up, alerting the user with a sound or visual signal. Gold detectors are specifically tuned to detect gold's unique conductivity and density, which creates a strong and distinct signal.

Step-by-step process:
  1. Transmission:
An electric current is passed through a search coil, generating an electromagnetic field that is projected downwards into the ground.
  2. Interaction:
If the field hits a piece of metal, it induces a current in the metal object, causing it to generate its own secondary magnetic field.
  3. Reception:
A second coil in the detector receives this re-transmitted field.
  4. Alert:
The device analyzes the received signal and, if it's a metallic object, it triggers an alert, such as a sound, to inform the user that metal has been found.
  5. Discrimination:
More advanced detectors can analyze the signal to distinguish between different types of metals, although they often detect other metals besides gold.
